Logical offcourse, the church controlled every aspect of life. and they wanted to make sure they kept their position. Lot of composers where priests so the church was a big part of their lives as well. it was the only way for them to earn some money. Opera's where devolped mutch later it started in the 16th century, Peri's opera Dafne is considered to be the first ( written around 1600 )
